Travel and Health Overview
More patients with pre-existing medical conditions are traveling internationally now than ever before. Either they visit another country for further medical care and management or to gain wonderful new experiences and lasting memories. Unfortunately, travel can also lead to health problems that range in severity from unpleasant to life threatening.
Travel-related health problems arise from a variety of factors, including exposure to infectious organisms, the use of certain types of transportation, and participation in certain activities such as
diving and high-altitude hiking during travel. Travel-related health problems can also arise when a pre-existing medical condition worsens during travel.
Star Home Nursing aims to provide assistance and care to patients traveling in order to prevent morst travel-related health problems. Our nurses create an individualized pre travel plan including safety precautions during travel. The travel nurse can administer injections and other medication, and provide guidance for staying healthy during the trip.
Our team of traveling nurses carefully makes decisions regarding the evaluation of the returning patient from travel based upon the duration and location of travel and, of course, upon the clinical status of the patient. They are aware that presence of fatigue is a normal concomitant of extensive travel and should not be viewed with alarm. However, they continue to monitor for any untoward signs such as the presence of fever, chills, sweats, headaches, gastrointestinal
symptoms, unexplained weight loss, cough, rash, or other complaints point to the need of medical evaluation. Patients who were ill during travel or who lived for a prolonged period of time may need careful post travel medical follow-up.
While it may seem stressful to travel abroad for medical care, Star Home Nurses are here to make your trip as smooth and comfortable as possible.
